Finding Your Ancestors
In
New Zealand.

Genealogical resources in New Zealand are fairly similar to those in Australia, but not all are readily available in Tasmania.

We are fortunate to have copies of the index to New Zealand Births, Deaths and Marriages at both the Tasmanian Family History Society's Launceston Branch and at the Launceston Library.

Although these do not tell you expressly where the event was registered, it is usually easy to find this from the registration index number.

At the beginning of most year's birth and death indexes, there is a brief table of each district followed by the first registration number for that district in that year, quarter or other period.

You may have to look carefully through this list with a good knowledge of New Zealand geography.

There is a series of booklets called "District Keys to the NZ Registration Indexes"
at the Launceston Branch Library of the Tasmanian Family History Society, which contain these tables in a much more useful form.

In the earlier part of the 19th century, several year's indexes are combined, although the years are usally listed separately for each letter of the alphabet.

New Zealand certificates are not expensive, (
NZ$9.50 as at January 1999, if you quote the reference number from the Microfiche index), and contain a good deal of information, especially after about 1875.
The address to write to for these is:
Registrar General,
PO Box 31-115,
Lower Hutt 6315, NZ.

A useful folder at Taylor St contains a booklet detailing what is contained on Birth and Death certificates for all Australian States and New Zealand, and also application forms for certificates for many places.

A large number of New Zealand cemeteries have been transcribed, and these transcriptions may be consulted at the Library at Taylor Street.

Unfortunately, there is, as yet, no overall index comparable to Tasmania's TAMIOT index. A useful book here, also held at the Taylor Street Library is "New Zealand Cemetery Records - A List of Holdings."
